Canada’s snowy luck finally ran out this year after terrible snowfall figures and poor skiing conditions led some to call it the worst for 10 years. People taking holidays in Canada this year got something of let down.
Canada has a strong repuation for supplying healthy doses of snowfall and quality conditions for those people after some snow fun. The resort of Whistler is a house hold name and thousands of people embark on the pilgrimage to the great Canadian Rockies every year in search of their adrenaline fix. This last season however did not offer the splendors that most people were used to.
The slopes were left desperately needing cover following a -30 degree high pressure period before Xmas and no snow really materialised out of the low pressure afterwards. There were small flurries happening now and again of around 4cm but not enough to stick and certainly not enough to ride on comfortably. One man interviewed as he left a resort states “it’s been borderline terrible”. Bare exposed slopes had been waiting for him when he made the trip out to Castle to previous week.“I maybe got 4 days of riding out of 14, that’s not good”. Another visitor said that she decided to ditch the skiing in favour of doing some sightseeing on one of the local company’s polar bear holidays.
The unreliable temperatures and pressures that caused the lack of snow have been blamed by many of the effects of global warming. This argument is brought into question however when you consider that many of the American resorts and most of those in Europe have just had one of the best seasons in their history.Bad luck is what most visitors put it down to and hope for better fortunes next season
