Along with Nessebar to the north, Sozopol is one of the gems on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Along with Nessebar, about 60 km to the north, Sozopol offers a combination of old-style architecture, cobblestone streets lined with picturesque houses, and numerous restaurants and coffee shops. This abundance is positioned on the top of high cliffs overlooking the Black Sea. Sozopol’s ancient center has been declared an archaeological preserve by the Bulgarian authorities. The town dates back to ancient times – the end of the 5th millennium b.c. The town was restored in 610 b.c. and was named Apolonia. It rapidly developed into a center for trade and shipping. The visitors can enjoy the cultural and historical heritage from the antiquity and the medieval times. There are a number of churches, old wooden houses and an ancient fort wall in the old town of Sozopol.
